The Best of Nursing...Volume 5...

Unfortunately, I had another sad week.  I had a patient pass away, but fortunately his family had made the difficult decision to let him pass away peacefully.  No matter the age or the illness, it is still a sad situation.

The best funny moment was when a patient told me that he did not understand how women with big butts go to the bathroom.  I nearly peed my pants.  He kept calling me baby doll and told me he loved me.  I guess this is the one case where being in your 80's pays off.  Who am I to yell at an 80 year old for loving me?

Anniversary Celebration...

This year for our anniversary dinner, we went to a local Kansas City favorite, The Rieger.  We were lucky enough to get to sit at the chefs' table and watch the chefs at work.  It was a really fun experience. We both love the Rieger and both had delicious meals.  Ken is still talking about the Kansas City strip that he had, it was THAT good.

I was in love with my dessert that I had.  It was the frozen souffle and it was amazing.

My amazing dessert

After dinner, we went down to Manifesto for a few cocktails.  This has to be one of my favorite places to enjoy a drink.  It is lit up by candlelight and I just love the entire experience.

Taking selfies in the dark and I was telling Ken to keep his eyes open!

Such an amazing night celebrating our anniversary!   (dress)

Thank you Ken for taking me out and spoiling me!  I appreciate you making all of the arrangements so I did not have to do a thing.  Here's to another 8 years or so!!

8 years...

Today is our 8 year wedding anniversary.  Eight years!  How did that happen so quickly?  I am not going to pretty like everything is perfect all of the time, because that would be false.  I am going to say that I am so lucky that I am married to the perfect person for me.

Ken makes me laugh, takes care of me, and is a wonderful husband.  I am so fortunate that he is mine.

Happy Anniversary Ken!  I cannot wait to celebrate with you tonight and on vacation.

Life Lately...

It seems like we have been spending most of our time lately either working or resting.  We are both getting pretty excited about Summer getting here and vacation to follow!

Raining days call for soup and sandwiches.

Someone started digging in the backyard.  She had not done this since she was one.  She is pretty difficult to get mad at.

That face.  Despite her look, she did not get into trouble.

We had a beautiful morning at March for Babies!

I volunteered for the 9th year in a row.

I was happy to get to spend some time with this guy since we had both been busy with work.  Working three 12 hour shifts in a row does not allow for a lot of time together.

I finished my run and found these two waiting on me.

I love evening snuggles with my girl.

The Best of Nursing...Volume 4...

This was a pretty tough week.  I had my first code blue situation, which ended up resulting in the patient passing away the next day.  I had been part of code blues before, but this was the first time it had happened to one of my patients.  It was pretty tough to handle, especially since I had gotten to know him and his family.

Since I am all about trying to find the best in most things I would have to say the best part of the week was the wonderful compliment that I received from the patient's daughter that I had gotten to know.  She told me that she was so grateful that her dad had me as his nurse for his final days and that I was the best nurse she had ever met.  Given her grief and the horrible situation she was experiencing, I took this as the best compliment I could ever possibly receive.  I deal with many horrible people that sometimes make me question the human population, but people with this much kindness restore my faith in humanity.

That was the best moment of the week, despite the loss.

A Weekend in Denver...

A few weekends ago, I got to go on a trip to Denver to spend time with my friends Jennie and Lindsay.  I was so excited for this weekend away because it had been some time since I had gotten to see Jennie.

We had big plans to do a lot of hiking, but unfortunately the forecast was for snow.  The forecast held true and dumped a massive amount of snow on Saturday.  We did not let that ruin our fun!

I sent this to Ken while I was waiting to board my 6:25 am flight.  True and true.

Our first stop in Denver was breakfast at Lucille's. It is my favorite breakfast ever.  I love their biscuits!

Since it snowed all day on Saturday, we did a lot of city and indoor things instead of hiking the incline like we had planned.

Lindsay and me being silly at Wyncoop Brewery.  (Uggs)

Jennie and me outside of the Denver Central Market, which was one of my favorite things to see that day.

Inside Denver Central Market.  We had some delicious brownie bites there, yum!

Playing board games at a bar/restaurant that you pay $5 for unlimited games and order drinks and food.  It was fun, but I am certain we were the only people there that were not living in our moms' basements...

Having serious competitions at Dave and Busters.

On Sunday, most of the snow had melted, so we went to Golden so that we could go for a hike on Lookout Mountain.

I was glad to see the Rockies with snow!

We built a snowman and had a few snowball fights.

Lindsay, Jennie, Rebecca and me on top of a rock

Playing I am the king of the mountain!

It was a very snowy hike and we all had very wet feet.

We had such a fun time hiking around in the snow.  (Pink aviators)

After our hike, we went into Golden for food and drinks.  The remainder of my time there was spent telling nursing stories, laughing, eating, and just enjoying girl time.  I was so grateful to have gotten to see Jennie and meet Lindsay as well.

This girl helped me get through Ironman training in 2014 and I am so grateful to have met her!

Now you girls have to come see my in Kansas City!  A big thanks to Ken for holding down the fort while I was awhile having girl time.

The Best of Nursing...Volume 3...

I am behind a week!  The funniest thing from two weeks ago was when a patient accused me of drinking her Gatorade.  Yeah, because that is what I am in the business of doing.

P.S. If you can drink Gatorade, it is time for you to move out of the ICU...
