We decided to take a fairly early train from Lucerne to Lauterbrunnen. The train ride was around 2.5 hours and we were prepared with lattes and pastries! We hoped to arrive in Lauterbrunnen with the sun out and us being able to get out for a hike on our first day.
We were not disappointed when we arrived! The sun was shining and the Valley looked stunning.
Welcome to Lauterbrunnen!
We dropped our stuff off at our hotel and went directly to the cable car to head up to Grutschalp. On our way, we ran into our friend Adam, that works at Hotel Staubbach! It had been a year since we have seen him and it was so nice to catch up with him!
We took the cable car up to Grutschalp and marveled at the views. We were planning to hike to Sulwald Stubli, which we missed out on doing last year since we were delayed a day in DC.
I always forget how unbelievable the view is when you step off of the cable car in Grutschalp.
I am pictured to show the sheer size of the mountains.
Looking back at the Grutschalp cable car stop
Beautiful views across the valley
My hiking partner for the day
So excited to be hiking to Sulwald Stubli, one of our favorite places
Wengen across the valley
My beloved Sulwald Stubli
The sun was still shining above us so we decided to have lunch and drinks at Sulwald. It ended up being the busiest we had ever seen it given how beautiful of a day it was!
The Sulwald views are just goregous
The clouds were starting to move in and we were grateful we started our hike when we did.
Loving the wine and the beautiful view!
The perfect mid-hike lunch!
Darling Sulwald Stubli
We took the cable car down to Isenfluh and walked back to Lauterbrunnen. We did not really feel like sitting down for a formal dinner, so we walked to Camping Jungfrau to see if they still had their little bar area and take away pizzas. We were in luck!
Pizza and wine at Camping Jungfrau. It was chilly and drizzling. We are nice and dry under a big umbrella.
The drizzling stopped, so we left for a nice valley walk. Walking down the Lauterbrunnen Valley is one of my favorite things to do.
Late evening valley views
We got about a half mile down the valley and it started drizzling. It was not too bad then it started raining. Then it started pouring! We dashed into a farmer's barn for a bit until it let up enough for us to head back to our hotel.
Enjoying the rain
Hiding from the downpour!
We made it back to our hotel and enjoyed a glass of wine. The rain eventually stopped and we went back out to walk around for a bit.
The clouds were hanging low in the valley
Lauterbrunnen's iconic church
There is a path you can walk up to get a view of the valley with the church, the waterfall, and the cliffs. We did this last year and decided to walk up the path again to get a view with the clouds.
Lauterbrunnen is so beautiful and charming!
The clouds moved a bit while we were there. It is crazy to think how much snow is on the mountains in the back during the Spring vs Summer!
Another couple was up there and offered to take a photo of us. We never have nonselfie photos on vacation, so this was a treat!
I laugh because I look so tiny next to Ken! It is crazy to think that these pictures were taken after 9:00 pm.
We ended the night back at our hotel watching a show on Prime TV called Your Honor. It was a wonderful first day in Lauterbrunnen!
