We woke up on Wednesday morning and hopped on the ferry to head to Brunnen so that we could hike along the lake to Vitznau. The ferry took almost two hours, but the scenery was lovely so we did not mind the time.
As soon as we got on the ferry, a man and his dog got on next to us and the dog waited for the man to pull out a blanket so that he could lay on it. Talk about spoiled.
I was very jealous of this dog and may have asked Ken where my blanket was.
We arrived in Brunnen and were greeted with a darling little lakeside village. We stopped to get a soda and a Snickers and were soon on our way to Vitznau.
Lake Lucerne from Brunnen
It was looking like it was going to be a beautiful day.
The path winds along the lake past the marina
I loved all of the boats
Part of the trail was closed due to a landslide, so we stayed along the lake a little longer than expected. As soon as we passed the section that was closed, we started to climb up above the lake.
Looking back at Lake Lucerne
This is a hike I have wanted to do for a long time. I have wanted to board the ferry, travel across the lake, and hike back towards lucerne, stopping for drinks along the way. I was so excited.
My handsome hiking date for the day
Looking down at Lake Lucerne and Brunnen in the background.
We watched the sailboats on the water as we climbed
Overall the climb was not that steep and we were surprised how quickly we made it to the max elevation of the hike.
We stopped in the village of Gersau for lunch. We arrived during the small window of time when the restaurants are closed. We stopped at the market and bought some sandwiches and chips and enjoyed lunch along the water.
Our lunch view
After leaving Gersau, we hiked back up to continue on the way to Vitznau.
Looking down at Gersau as we climb. Look at how beautiful that water is!
Ken picked me a flower for my hair, which is tradition during our hikes.
There ended up being a surprise refreshment stop at the top of our climb. There was a darling little place, Gartenrestaurant Kuorez, where we stopped for Aperol Spritz, pommes frites, and amazing views.
This was such an unexpected stop and was one of my favorite places for a drink during our entire trip.
I lost my flower, so Ken found me a replacement, which I think was better than the first one!
More beautiful views
Looking down into Vitznau
We arrived in Vitznau and were not quite ready to head back to Lucerne so we stopped for drinks at a little place with outdoor seating while we waited for a later ferry.
The Vitznau dock is gorgeous
We found a spot outside on the ferry to watch the scenery. It was not crowed at all and it was quite an enjoyable ride back to Lucerne. Ken went to the bar and got us drinks. I had no idea how much I would enjoy the ferry ride back to Lucerne, but I absolutely loved it.
Cruising around Lake Lucerne
A glass of wine, beautiful scenery, and the wind in my hair. It was such a great ride back to Lucerne.
Taking in all of the scenery and loving my rose wine!
The hike was about 8.5 miles. We took our time, stopping for pictures. This is definitely a great option if you are like us and like to escape the city during the day and experience more of the area surrounding Lucerne.
Happy on our way back to Lucerne.
We ended the night with Italian food and were ready to head to one of our favorite places in the morning. We had a great time in Lucerne, but Lauterbrunnen was calling!
