We left Kansas City and flew to Copenhagen, Denmark and then onto Munich from there. We both barely slept on our flight to Copenhagen, but somehow got wonderful sleep from Copenhagen to Munich on a much smaller plane.
Ready for our eight hour flight that was leaving at 10:00 pm, which is past my bed time.
Once in Munich we were delighted to see a Christmas market set up at the airport. The Germans love Christmas and all the traditions. We took the S-Bahn to the Marienplatz as our hotel was just a few blocks away. Once we exited the S-Bahn I was so delighted to see what awaited in the Marienplatz. It was Christmas Heaven!
We found our hotel and dropped off our bags. Since we were arriving late in the day, it was already dark, which can prove to be a little difficult with finding a landmark one has never seen before.
We left the hotel armed with smiles and ready for our first German Christmas market experience. We immediately stopped for our first gluhwein and were not disappointed. The moment that gluhwein hit my lips, it was like an old friend.
We wandered around the market for a bit before deciding on a little bit of market food. I had read that there is no point in eating at a restaurant and instead you should enjoy the food offerings at the markets.
Enjoying my gluhwein and schnitzel sandwich and thrilled to be in Munich! My teeth and lips had a permanent wine color stay for this trip. Seriously, I love me some gluhwein!
The Christmas tree in the Marienplatz. I wish you could smell how wonderfully everything smelled with the gluhwein, sausages, and spiced nuts. It was amazing.
Some of the many offerings of the stalls within the market
The stalls were all in the Marienplatz and even on the streets leading in different directions from the main square. We ended up finding a little block that we loved complete with unique food choices and different drinks all centered around a giant German Christmas pyramid.
Christmas lights were everywhere and the entire area felt very magical.
My favorite market stalls near the Marienplatz
Ken got the most amazing fish sandwich from this stall
We spent a lot of time in this area, as it was a little off the beaten path and we loved the food and drink choices.
Ken enjoying his fish sandwich and his special beer at the market.
While we were enjoying our drinks, special beer for Ken and a St. Nicholas for me, we met a local couple from Munich named Ludwig and Anna. We stood at the stall and talked to them for about an hour about different areas to visit in Germany and about the markets. They were so friendly and a lot of fun. It turns out, they both grew up on Lake Constance which is an area of Germany I have been dying to get to. What a small world.
After saying good night to Ludwig and Anna, we found ourselves at the local Augustiner which was only one block from our hotel. I am pretty sure that Ken thought that this was the best hotel location ever, being only one block from his favorite brewery.
Augustiner was extremely packed considering it was after 9:00 pm on a Thursday. We ordered our dunkel and enjoyed talking about our first market and about the days to come. We were pretty tired but managed to stay out enjoying all the Germans at the bier hall. It was such a wonderful first day in Munich.
Dunkels x2 at Augustiner
Up next, a day trip to Innsbruck, Austria!
