Bergen is one of those cities that I feel are a must visit on any Norway itinerary. It is considered the gateway to the fjords. The drive from Odda to Bergen took us on the most beautiful drive of the entire trip.
We had amazing views of the Hardangerfjord and views of the many cherry tree orchards that lined the fjord. We drove thru a village that had stands set up with fresh cherries being sold and by the time we realized what they were, it was too late to stop. We figured there would be more along the drive, but we were incorrect. Our only regret was that we did not turn around so that we could buy some cherries.
Pictures do not do the drive justice. It was beautiful!
Just some cherry trees growing by a fjord.
We climbed up a pretty significant climb and had a beautiful view. We pulled over for me to get a few pictures and that husband of mine decided to drive off as if he was leaving me!
Clearly I was super concerned!
This picture was worth almost getting left behind!
We stopped in the village on the left in search of coffee to no avail. Never fear, we found coffee in the next village by the ferry stop.

Bidding farewell to the village along Hardangerfjord
We finally arrived to Bergen and found our Airbnb. Our host was not available to meet us until around 3:00 pm, so we found what we thought was open street parking. We walked down to the harbor area in search of a place to eat.
We wandered around a bit and saw the beautiful Bryggen area. After we snapped a few pictures it started pouring and I mean pouring. We quickly walked back to an area with restaurants and found one with heaters and outside seating. We enjoyed a little lunch and waited out the rain.
Bryggen Bergen, Norway
So happy to be in Bergen!
After our lunch we saw a rather shocking site: the sun! We were so excited. We walked back over to the Bryggen area and got a few more pictures with the sun shining.
Blue sky over Bryggen
I think it looks prettiest with the blue sky above
So happy that the sun is making us squint
We checked into our Airbnb, which was in such an amazing location. We were right by the Floyen funicular station and had such easy access to walk around downtown. We found that the parking we thought was open street parking was not when we presented with a parking ticket.
We ultimately decided having the car in Bergen was a pain so after we dropped off our bags we returned the car to Avis and tackled the rest of Bergen on foot. We stopped off at Henrik ol & Vinstove AS a beer bar Ken wanted to visit. They had about 60 different beers on tap and Ken tried a few. I enjoyed a glass of wine.
Walking around Bergen
We went to a place near our apartment and enjoyed dinner with Aperol Spitz which is a delicious drink we have had in Italy. After that, we enjoyed some wine in our apartment before watching a movie and falling asleep. It was a great first day in Bergen.
Up next, we hike above Bergen!
