Germany and Italy 2023...Day 4: Arriving in Ortiesi

We woke up on Friday and enjoyed breakfast at our hotel before going to the train station to get to the Dolomites! Ken has wanted to visit the Dolomites for a while and we decided to finally make it happen. We chose Ortisei as our home base for four nights. We chose Ortisei because it seemed to have a laid-back vibe and we could use public transportation in the area to hike.

After train changes and the bus, it took close to 5 hours to get from Munich to Ortisei. When we arrived, we dropped our stuff off at the hotel and quickly went to the cable car so that we could see the beautiful Alpe di Siusi!

The view walking to the cable car

When we got out of the cable car and walked and saw the view, our jaws dropped. It was simply stunning.

We were so happy to be there!

I spy some alpine cows!

We did a circuit hike to enjoy the Alpe di Siusi.  Since we traveled in the morning, we did not have unlimited time with the cable cars stopping at 18:00. We decided to do as much of the hike as we could and ended up turning around and not doing the full loop. I figured everyone would be quite upset with me if we had to hike all the way down the mountain when it was so warm!

Speaking of warm, the weather was very unseasonably hot in Ortisei. It is normally in the 60's, however, we got to experience the 90's. Guess what, our hotel did not have air conditioning. Yeah. We were hot!

About 15 minutes into our hike, we stopped at the Malga Schgaguler Schwaige hutte to enjoy lunch.

Aperol Spritz views!

Malga Schgaguler Schwaige was a great stop for lunch! I loved the local cheese and bacon that I had for lunch.

I cannot believe we just had lunch at such a darling little place!

We left the hutte and continued down the trail. We passed by another hutte, that had a beautiful outdoor seating area. Too bad it was only about 10 minutes from our lunch spot or we probably would have stopped!

The views from the trail were unbelievable!

Katie and I were having a wonderful time together.

We stopped nonstop to take photos.

The blue sky, the green grass, and the rugged mountains make it very beautiful.

We passed by another mountain hutte with beautiful views and people were out enjoying the beautiful day.

Such a cute little view point

We kept hiking for about 30 more minutes before we decided to turn around and go back to the mountain hutte for a drink.

More beautiful views

We saw our cow friends again on our way back to the cable car

I love alpine cows

The gorgeous view was still waiting on us once we got back to the cable car

It got super hot while we were out hiking, but the views were absolutely stunning.

We loved our first little hike in the Dolomites!

I was disappointed that we had to cut the hike short instead of completing the entire circuit. The cable cars stopping at 18:00 can be a little limiting when you are unable to get an early start.

We rode the cable car back down to Ortisei. Katie and I did a little shopping around and then met up with Ken and Mike at a wine bar. We enjoyed a little wine and then went to dinner. We all enjoyed delicious pizzas.

Afterward, we went to a different wine bar to end the evening.

Our first day in Ortisei was lovely, even though it ended up being much warmer than we expected!
